Kashmir Institute of International Relations in collaboration with Banking & Finance Department University of Kotli, AJK organized training workshop titled “One day Training workshop on Disaster Management” at Kotli, AJK on 27 December, 2019. Around 60 people from various backgrounds including students, social activists and young scholars participated in the workshop. The training was aimed at strengthening the capacities of students to mainstream disaster risk reduction concepts, principles and practices in the planning and implementation of community development efforts. This year we intend to implement our revamped disaster management program for individuals residing in Azad Kashmir. Logistical challenges, poor infrastructure and lack of awareness have worsened the impact of natural disasters. Participants will work through a hypothetical disaster situation and develop practical solutions that can save lives and lessen impact. The idea is to paint a very vivid picture of what could potentially occur and how widespread its effect could be. Subsequently, the participants will be able to develop solutions for pain points they have identified through the first portion of the workshop. With practical exposure, we intend to:
• To identify and analyze different types of hazards, disasters and examine community centered approaches to reduce disaster risks.
• Build skills that can mitigate the impact of any future disaster through better planning.
• To understand and analyze various disaster risk reduction frameworks and models with special focus on prevalent hazards such as drought, flush floods, human wildlife conflict, armed conflict and disease epidemic and earthquake.
• Create plans for faster and more effective logistical support in case of a disaster.
• Guide participants on how to engage the public section to adhere to earthquake resistant infrastructure.
• To understand the philosophy, concepts and principles of community based disaster risk reduction.
• To understand and apply the process of participatory risk analysis and assess impact of major hazards in their working context.
• To understand and apply community planning process (preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery) and use participatory tools and processes to do so…
• To take a lead role in facilitating the establishment or strengthening community organizations to manage development programs.
• To develop action plan to support community based risk reduction efforts taking into consideration major hazards in the region like floods and earthquake.
