Kashmir Solidarity Day observed on February 5 every year, serves as a poignant reminder of the sufferings endured by the Kashmiri people in their quest for independence. This day holds profound significance for Pakistan as it pays tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Kashmiri's freedom. This day is a demonstration of unwavering support for the Kashmiri freedom movement, emphasizing Pakistan's commitment to standing with the people of Kashmir against the injustices they face. It commemorates Pakistan's defense of Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the partition in 1947–1948, symbolizing national unity.

Kashmir, often referred to as "heaven on Earth," has witnessed decades of turmoil, overshadowed by global indifference. The invasion of Indian military forces into Kashmir after the emergence of Pakistan led to a conflict that persisted for years. Despite a UN resolution prompting the withdrawal of Pakistani forces, the situation in Kashmir took a tragic turn. Unfortunately, the UN resolution was not implemented, leaving the Kashmiri people subjected to over 70 years of forced occupation, robbery, torture, murder, assault, and neglect.


The historical roots of the Kashmir conflict trace back to the subcontinent's partition, where Lord Mountbatten and the Indian government collaborated against Pakistan, forcibly taking control of what is now occupied Kashmir. The 1947 partition further intensified the struggle, leading to the rest of three wars between Pakistan and India. The UN resolution in 1949 aimed to determine the region's fate with the consent of Kashmiri citizens, but implementation faltered.


The Indian military operations in Kashmir have resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, including human rights abuses, victimization, rape, torture and disappearances. Independent sources and human rights advocates estimate that more than 100,000 residents have been lost since 1989, depicting a grim picture of the atrocities incited on the Kashmiri people. Despite the relentless oppression by Indian armed forces, the resilient voice of independence has echoed from every corner of Kashmir. The youth, in particular, have vehemently condemned the brutal actions of the military. The Indian government imposed a lockdown in 2019, exacerbating the challenges faced by the Kashmiri people. Scarcity of food and water, confinement to homes, and the inability to work have taken a toll on the survival of many.


However, the spirit of the Kashmiri youth remains unbroken. Protests and rallies continue unabated, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to the cause of freedom. Pakistan has consistently supported the Kashmiri citizens' approach to resolving the conflict, raising the issue on international platforms. Every Prime Minister and the Pakistani government have emphasized the need for a just resolution to the Kashmir problem based on the preferences of the Kashmiri people. Kashmir Solidarity Day serves as a powerful symbol of unity and support for the Kashmiri people in their struggle for freedom.


It is a day to react to the historical context of the conflict, the human rights abuses suffered by the Kashmiri population, and the unwavering commitment of Pakistan to stand by their side. The international community must take heed of the plight of the Kashmiri people and work towards a just and peaceful resolution to ensure a better future for the region.
